An educational platform for future generations leveraging the power of virtual and augmented reality.

Alter Learning

PROBLEM

Alter Learning is an educational platform that specializes in the meticulous design and development of educational games for kids rooted in scientific principles.

Sitting in the pre-IPO journey, Alter Learning is working on creating a consistent design system that can be applied to both the home page and user login portal. The question for this project was how might we create a design package that will run along Alter Learning landing and portal pages creating design consistency.

ROLE

I was hired as the lead designer for this project that ran for 6 weeks, I was in charge of nine UX Designers across the globe. Together we delivered the following:

Design package, prototypes, usability tests

SOLUTION

Re-design the Alter Learning landing and portal page integrating new design systems to help create design consistency.

GOALS

  • Enhance user experience when using both the landing page and user portal

  • Integrate design system to create design consistency

  • Test the new design and obtain user feedback

The Process

The entire process took 6 weeks, this was a quick yet thorough project. Implementing user feedback the team was successful in integrating the revised design systems for both the Alter Learning landing page and user portal.

User Interviews and Data Synthesis

Our team conducted five moderated user interviews with Alter Learning users between the ages of 10-15 years of age. Each interview lasted 20 minutes and was held via video call.

KEY POINTS

After conducting user interviews and holding a virtual team analysis the design team agreed on four major design improvements that took priority for the scope of the project. These design changes included:

  • Splash page hero images and videos

  • Re-designing button and iconography hierarchy and design

  • Updating card design for game layout

  • Improving top navigation bar design

Integreating The Design System

Utilizing user feedback and the pre-existing media kit the design team was quickly able to integrate a consistent design system throughout the landing and login page.

HOME PAGE

Users could access all their downloaded games and see the progress they had made on each game.

CARD DESIGN

The game cards now all consisted of negative space and button hierarchy allowing for easier user navigation.

DASHBOARD

Users could easily access all games on both the landing page and user login. As a result, users spent less time looking for their desired game of choice.

Next Steps

Given that this project was only six weeks Iā€™d say as a design team we were able to implement some integral design decisions and changes. However, if we had more time to work on this project I would have made a few of the following changes:

  • Test the design changes on a younger and older group of users to understand their pain points with the design.

  • Conduct heat mapping tests to understand where users struggled the most with navigation.

  • Hold more focus groups to gain a better understanding of why the users enjoy using this platform.

USABILITY TESTING

Using the design package the design team created a mobile prototype to be tested alongside the web application. We ran ten remote usability tests each test lasted 20-30 minutes, five usability tests were conducted using the mobile application and five were conducted using the re-vamped website.

USER FEEDBACK AND FINDINGS

After running usability tests the team concluded that the new design systems had been successfully integrated and now both the landing page and user login consisted of design consistency. Some of the main user feedback was:

  • Games were now easier to access.

  • Users enjoyed having a space where they could find all past played games and keep track of game progress.

  • The landing page and user login page consisted of similar imagery and informational hierarchy.

  • The overall navigation felt more digestible, especially for younger users
